Java-E UK - Re-sale/Provenance
"Provenance" is proof of the derivation and/or history of a specific item. Items which have good provenance are much easier to sell and generally much more valuable as a proven derivation/history obviously enhances the item's appeal to collectors.
Provenance can take many different forms, such as letters from the original owners, signed/dated photographs, certificates, historical documentation mentioning the product etc.
Provenance has 2 main effects. Firstly, it helps to prove the validity/history of the item. Secondly it gives a historical element to the item, so that you can see when/where it has been before, and whether or not it was owned/used by a historical figure etc. Both of these effects are very valuable to collectors. Good provenance is a sign of a well looked-after item which has been cherished through the years by all its owners.
We at Java-E UK believe that provenance on all items that we sell should be given to our customers in as full a way as is reasonably possible so that our customers can be secure in their being able to prove the provenance of the items that they buy from us.
As a lot of our items are very unusual, and we do not have mass production techniques (most items being hand-made by skilled craftsmen, and designed with a small-scale production in mind), we feel that our items are potentially much more collectable than those from many other companies, and we feel it our duty to help prove the value of our items to any of our customers who decide to sell our products on (e.g. to auctions) in later years. We fully appreciate that the sale of our items to our customers is by no means the end of the item's life of sale, as such items are likely to be resold by our customers to other people in later years.
Once we sell an item to you, we have no financial restrictions with regard to you selling the item on to other collectors; you are welcome to sell the item at an auction etc to other collectors as you see fit and we do not expect/wish to see/get any profit/income that you may make from such a sale. The designers of the items that we sell also do not expect/wish to see any additional royalties from re-sale of those items. The designers get a royalty paid by us at the time that we sell it to you, and the life-cycle of the item is then complete as far as the designer is concerned.
However, if you sell our items to other people, you must accept the following conditions:
1. Documentation
You must give the buyer all documentation which relates to the product which proves its provenance/history, including any certificates that we have given you and any conditions attached to the item which we have given you and any receipts showing/proving the various previous owners etc.
2. Design Rights and Copyright
You must ensure that the buyer knows that the design of the item and the item itself is copyrighted (by the original designer; indicated on your certificate), and that the item (and/or its design) can not be copied in any way in any means for any reason.
3. Liability
You are entirely responsible for any tax/financial/consumer or other relevant regulations/laws regarding the re-sale. If relevant laws change which adversely effect the valid sale of the item, then that is entirely your responsibility.
If you accept the above 3 conditions, then we welcome re-sale of the items to other collectors, and we'd be very interested/curious to hear from you about how much you managed to fetch for the item and what kind of people were interested in it.
Likewise, if you get an expert to value our items, then we would also be very interested to hear their views.
